A man was taken into custody on January 2, 2025, after attempting to enter a Waymo autonomous vehicle in downtown Los Angeles. The incident occurred near the intersection of 5th and Spring streets, where the individual reportedly tried to open the doors of the self-driving car, which was operating without a human driver at the time.
According to Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson Officer Jane Smith, the man was observed behaving erratically before approaching the vehicle. “Our officers responded promptly to reports of a disturbance involving an autonomous vehicle,” Smith stated. “The individual was detained without incident and is currently undergoing a mental health evaluation.”
Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has been testing its autonomous vehicles in various cities, including Los Angeles, as part of its efforts to expand self-driving technology. In a statement, Waymo emphasized its commitment to safety: “We are aware of the incident involving one of our vehicles and are cooperating fully with local authorities.
